LAB BAND F.A.Q.
DO I HAVE TO BE ENROLLED AT JAMPRO MUSIC FACTORY TO BE IN A BAND?
Yes, our Lab Band program is only available to students enrolled in Applied Music at JamPro Music Factory.
I WOULD LIKE TO BE IN A BAND, HOW DO I START?
That’s easy, just contact us or fill out the Student Band Request Form below! The wait time to join a band varies quite a bit and depends on multiple factors including how many students are on the waiting list, the disciplines currently needed, rehearsal scheduling, and band leader availability, etc.
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE SINGING OR PLAYING DO I NEED TO BE IN A BAND?
It is preferable that you have been taking private lessons for at least a year. Our bands vary both in age and skill levels and we place new band members into bands that are appropriate for them.
HOW MUCH COMMITMENT DOES IT TAKE TO BE IN A BAND?
Commitment level is perhaps the most important aspect of being in a band. Being in a band involves more than just you and requires a high level of commitment from the student (and the parents). Like team sports, the rest of the band is relying on you to show up for rehearsals and performances – and to show up prepared. That said, we understand students often have other commitments and we offer a few different options in our Lab Band program based largely on commitment abilities.
WHO RUNS THE BAND REHEARSALS?
A JamPro Music Factory instructor is assigned to each band. During the semester other instructors are occasionally brought in to work on specific areas needing improvement.
CAN I CHOOSE WHICH BAND I WANT TO BE IN?
Usually not, bands are formed and managed based on the best combination of students. We pair students with similar music interests, ages, maturity levels and abilities and regularly make changes. That said, if there is a particular band you want to be in let us know and we'll take that into consideration when making your band assignment.
WILL I STAY IN THE SAME BAND FOR THE WHOLE SEMESTER?
The overall goal is to keep students working together for extended periods of time, however we do make changes when necessary. Experience has shown that due to the varying commitment levels of students, some students excel beyond their band and need to be moved to a more advanced band, and some fall behind their band and slow down the progress of the band. As these situations develop we make adjustments.
DO ALL BANDS PERFORM IN PUBLIC?
Yes, and where each band performs depends on the band. Our most advanced bands both on the JamPro Music Factory stage and perform around the community at various high-profile events. Developmental and Performing bands perform primarily at pubic showcase concerts held at JamPro Music Factory.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM NOT FITTING IN WITH THE BAND?
We are usually able to identify any tensions early on and work to quickly to alleviate those. We have found that in most cases issues are the result of mismatched commitment or maturity levels. Sometimes simply discussing an issue works, and other times making changes to the band works. It depends on the situation and we make those decisions based on what we believe is best for everyone in the band, not just one member.
IF I AM EXCELLING BEYOND MY BAND, CAN I MOVE TO A HIGHER BAND?
Usually yes. In the case where a dedicated student is excelling beyond their band the goal then becomes finding a better situation for the student. This may take time and depends on what options are available at the time. It's worth noting, however, that there have been instances where a student (and/or parent) think they are performing at a higher level than they are and want to move to a higher level band. In those cases we will communicate and work to realign expectations.
IF I AM FALLING BEHIND WILL I BE NOTIFIED BEFORE I AM MOVED TO ANOTHER BAND?
Yes, we will communicate with you as we see these situations develop. In most scenarios, when a student is falling behind it is the result of a mismatched commitment level of that student relative to the rest of the band. The goal is to keep bands working together and to resolve issues without making changes to the band. If after identifying and discussing issues with you things don’t improve, changes will need to be made.
CAN MISSED REHEARSALS BE MADE UP?
Unfortunately no. Given there 3-5 other members in your band rehearsals will still be held even if you are unable to attend. For this reason we include a number of free rehearsals in the price of each semester.
WHO PICKS THE SONGS?
While we encourage students to suggest songs for their band, we ultimately have the final say in song selection. Songs need not only to be appropriate for the skill level of the band, but they also need to adhere to our lyric and content policies. We also like to maintain diversity within a band's set list and will include songs from different eras and genres.
